Asus Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition laptop review

Asus unveiled the limited edition Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition laptops at CES 2022 this year. These devices were released for the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Asus laptop into space.

The Space Edition features a space-themed design, a 3.5-inch ZenVision OLED display on the display lid, and a powerful 12th Gen Intel Core i7 processor. In this review, we will share our impressions of using a laptop.

Equipment and design

The Asus Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition comes in a matte black box with a handle that makes you want to call it a suitcase as it opens like a case. Inside the laptop is placed in an additional case made of thick cardboard with a holographic coating. Along with it, the so-called Package From Space envelope with a sticker pack and various documentation is packed.

The power supply for charging the laptop is also packed in a separate case. It is worth noting that the manufacturer is moving away from using a proprietary connector in favor of USB-C.

The aluminum body of the Asus Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition received a titanium-colored finish. The texture is matte, so the surface does not collect handprints. On the cover, as a decor element, there is a drawing with Morse code, in which the message Ad Astra Per Aspera (Through hardships to the stars) is encrypted.

Centered on the right side in a horizontal orientation on the lid is a 3.5-inch ZenVision OLED display. It is black and white and can display various animations and useful information such as the date and time.

The Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition chassis has received MIL-STD 810H military certification and has passed the US standard testing for devices used for space travel. In other words, the laptop is resistant to aggressive external influences, whether it be shaking, vibration, pressure drops or high humidity.

On the left side of the laptop there is an HDMI port, two USB-C connectors and three air outlet slots. On the right, there are also three air outlets, one USB-A, a 3.5 mm jack for connecting a wired headset, and a slot for microSD memory cards.

The laptop lid opens with a little effort with one hand. The Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition is 16mm thick and weighs 1.4kg. This is a very compact device that fits easily into an everyday urban backpack.

If we talk about the design as a whole, it is worth noting a solid assembly. All elements are perfectly adjusted to each other. The laptop is securely placed on a horizontal surface thanks to four rubberized feet. When open, the Zenbook rises slightly. Thus, warm air is better removed and the most comfortable corner for working with text is created.

Touchpad and keyboard

The Asus Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition features a full-size ErgoSense keyboard. The distance between the centers of the keys is 19.05 mm. This contributes to comfortable, accurate and fast typing.

The keys received a concave shape with a recess of 0.2 mm. From an ergonomic point of view, this solution contributes to increased accuracy, accompanied by a pleasant tactile response.

The key travel is moderately deep with a pleasant slight resistance. It is enough to feel pressing, at the same time, the keyboard is very quiet. The spacebar is highlighted in burgundy with a pastel tint. The power button is located in the upper right corner of the keyboard unit. It has a built-in fingerprint scanner.

Under the keyboard is a fairly large touchpad with a smooth surface. It comes with a hydrophobic and oleophobic coating. Fingers on the touchpad glide very well, and it also recognizes multi-touch gestures. As for the size, in my opinion, it is optimal for a 14-inch laptop.

Zenbook 14X Space Edition

The Asus Zenbook 14X OLED model itself is very interesting due to the high-quality touch screen and a decent performance margin. Add to this the interesting decor details of the Space Edition series and we get a device with a pleasant and concise design, which is not a shame to get in a coffee shop and attract attention with space animations on an external display.

We also write down a good keyboard with a pleasant move, a comfortable touchpad and data protection with a fingerprint scanner as advantages.
