The boom in cryptocurrencies made it possible to make transactions that were impossible even a decade ago: for example, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey sold the ownership of his first tweet for almost $ 3 million: this information was recorded using an NFT token in the ether blockchain, and will exist there as long as this cryptocurrency is mined.
And now the Canadian company Geometric Energy Corporation has gone even further: it paid for the launch of a real DOGE-1 satellite using a Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX with a comic Dogecoin cryptocurrency. Interestingly, this cryptocurrency began to grow sharply in the last six months after Elon Musk’s tweets in support of it, before that, almost no one needed it, since one person created her joke in three hours.
However, this deal shows that Dogecoin, and indeed cryptocurrencies in general, is quite a serious way to pay for the service. For example, Geometric Energy CEO Samuel Reed said that “by formally closing a deal of this magnitude with Dogecoin, Geometric Energy Corporation and SpaceX have strengthened this cryptocurrency as the currency of account in the space sector.” SpaceX’s vice president of commercial sales, Tom Ochinero, agrees: “This mission will demonstrate the use of cryptocurrency outside of Earth orbit and lay the foundation for interplanetary commerce.”
As for the DOGE-1 satellite itself, it is just the least interesting in this whole story: in fact, it is a 40-kilogram cubesat with various sensors and cameras for studying the Moon, which is planned to be launched in 2022. It will carry several “digital art objects” from GeometricLabs Corporation and Geometric Gaming Corporation as a payload.
