Google released this week Chrome 91, the next version of its proprietary browser, which has received several new features and improvements. Among other things, the developers have updated the JavaScript engine V8, thanks to which the browser performance has increased by 23%.

This was achieved thanks to the integration of the new Sparkplug JS compiler, which provided significant performance gains. The V8 JavaScript engine itself plays a critical role in the browser, since it is used to process the vast majority of web pages.

«An important component of a fast browser is fast JavaScript execution. In Chrome, the V8 engine does the job.“Chrome Product Manager Thomas Nattestad wrote in a blog post. He also added that with the launch of the new compiler, Chrome 91 has become almost a quarter faster, thanks to which the browser saves more than 17 years of user processor life each day in total.

Developers in sufficient detail described the work the Sparkplug compiler, noting that it improves browser performance by relying on the compilation done by the Ignition interpreter. The developers call Sparkplug a “non-optimizing JavaScript compiler.” “First, he cheats; the functions it compiles are already compiled to bytecode, and the bytecode compiler has done most of the hard work <…> Sparkplug compiles from bytecode, not JavaScript source“, – said in the message of the developers.

For Chrome users, the announced innovations mean a significant increase in productivity, due to which interaction with the browser will become more comfortable. In addition, developers of other Chromium-based browsers will be able to take advantage of these benefits.
