Jio and Oppo Successfully Test SA 5G in India

There have recently been a number of trials for 5G connectivity in metropolitan cities in India, including areas such as Mumbai and Gurgaon. While most of these trials were for the sub 6GHz network, Reliance Jio has partnered with Oppo to field test Jio’s 5G SA (standalone) network.

This 5G trial also uses the Reno6 smartphone series from the Chinese tech giant. The device was chosen specifically for its ability to interact with a variety of 5G networks, with the Reno6 Pro supporting 11 5G bands and the Reno6 equipped with 13 5G bands.

Jio conducting this trial also marks an important milestone in India’s 5G roadmap as other trials in the region are for NSA (non standalone) networks only. The trial allows the handset to complete WhatsApp video calls over the 5G network.

For those unaware, the NSA network uses the existing 4G infrastructure to enhance 5G connectivity. On the other hand, the SA network uses 5G hardware/infrastructure exclusively.

“As a 5G pioneer, OPPO India is working relentlessly to accelerate the deployment of 5G and its accessibility for all. Our 5G standalone network trial for the Reno6 Series with Jio is part of our in-depth research into the 5G era to ensure a better user experience.” according to Tasleem Arif, VP, and R&D Head of OPPO India.

Tasleem Arif, further added that “The successful validation of the Reno6 Series devices on SA Jio’s 5G network is a testament to our commitment as a company to bring cutting-edge technology to our customers.”

Interestingly, this smartphone maker has set up its first overseas 5G innovation lab in Hyderabad, India, in December 2020. This lab is very important in the company’s 5G-related patents.
