For a long time, IT specialists have had a kind of entertainment – trying to run the original Doom on everything that has a processor. Actually, taking into account the maximum undemandingness of the game of the last century, it is possible to play it on calculators, refrigerators and even pregnancy tests. However, with the current trends, such entertainment may become a thing of the past, and a new one comes to replace it: the mining of cryptocurrency on everything that a miner can launch.
And this time, the stacksmashing enthusiasts distinguished themselves – they made the original Game Boy, a portable game console from 1989, which runs on an 8-bit Sharp processor with a frequency of as much as 4.2 MHz (this is a greatly simplified analogue of the then popular Zilog Z80 ). Of course, this was a difficult task: I had to significantly rewrite the ntgbtminer miner so that it could work in 8 KB of memory, and to connect the console to the Internet, I had to use a Raspberry Pi Pico laptop, which itself is several orders of magnitude faster than the Game Boy.
Nevertheless, the experience turned out to be successful – the console was able to mine at a speed of 0.8 hash / s. Is it a lot or a little? Modern mining devices (so-called ASICs) are capable of accelerating to hundreds of terahashes per second, that is, they are trillions of times faster. In terms of profitability, the Game Boy will bring in 1 ruble in approximately 1000 years of operation. Although, in fact, it will not – bitcoins will end earlier, approximately in the middle of the next century.
