More Waiting, PS5 is still rare until next year

Even though it has been released since the end of 2020, until now the PlayStation 5 (PS5) is still rare and difficult to buy (at official prices). This scarcity will still occur until 2022.

According to the CFO Sony Hiroki Totoki, PS5 demand in 2022 will still skyrocket, and Sony will not be able to fulfill all of these demands even though it has increased its production.

“I don’t think demand will abate this year and even if we can provide more PlayStation 5 devices next year, our supply will not be able to keep up with existing demand,” Totoki told analysts.

Totoki also compared the sales of PS5 with PS4, and predicts that PS5 demand will decline in the near future.

“We have sold more than 100 million units of PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine that market demand will decline easily,” he added, as quoted from The Verge, Monday (10/5/2021) .

As of March 31, Sony has sold around 7.8 million units of the PS5, and they are targeting to produce at least 14.8 million units in their financial year starting in April 2021.

In fact, the skyrocketing demand for the PS5 is an opportunity for Sony to sell higher. However, with these conditions it is even difficult, plus the scarcity of chips that has hit many industries.

Sony is not the only console manufacturer struggling to keep up with market demand due to limited supply. Nintendo had previously warned of a scarcity of components.

Totoki’s statement contradicts the statement of the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Jim Ryan, who said that the PS5 supply will gradually improve during 2021.
