Nintendo Co plans to launch a Switch game console model equipped with a wider Samsung OLED screen.
The Samsung Display Co will begin mass production of 720p resolution 7-inch OLED panels in early June with an initial monthly target of just under one million units, said the source, who asked not to be named.
The screens are scheduled to be delivered to assemblers sometime in July, the sources added. Nintendo and Samsung Display representatives declined to comment.
Nintendo is trying to keep its continuing-selling Switch lineup against Xbox and PlayStation.
However, this gadget is currently entering its fifth year, while Microsoft Corp. and Sony Corp. both have a new, more powerful engine on the market.
The gaming community has speculated online about the introduction of OLED, but Nintendo has remained tight-lipped.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in February that his company had no plans to announce a new Switch anytime soon.
Samsung’s involvement is the strongest indication that Nintendo is serious about updating the console, and on a large scale.
