OnlyFans, a social media platform where users can sell subscription access to their content, will ban sexual content from October.
Reporting The New York Times, Friday, OnlyFans has released a statement that they will block users who upload explicit photos and videos.
“To ensure the long-term continuation of the platform, we had to develop our content guidelines,” OnlyFans said in a statement.
However, a company spokesperson did not respond to questions about who made the request or what prompted the policy.
It is not yet known exactly how OnlyFans will determine the criteria for images or videos that feature sexually suggestive things after the ban goes into effect in October. However, the company has blocked posts containing sexual assault and violence, and banned minors from using their platform.
OnlyFans has been a source of income for two million creators, including sex workers, during the pandemic. The company says it has helped democratize sex work, among other things by letting content creators run their own businesses effectively and own the content they upload on the platform.
The company also said that collectively, creators have earned more than $4.5 billion since OnlyFans started nearly five years ago.
OnlyFans has over 130 million users who pay monthly fees to content creators. With that access, customers can also send direct messages and tip creators to get on-demand images or videos, according to their sexual tastes.
Celebrities have also joined the platform, including Cardi B, Tyga, Chris Brown, and Bella Thorne. Social media influencers are also joining in, including from TikTok and YouTube.
Many sex workers, striptease dancers, and porn stars rely on OnlyFans as their main source of income.
Meredith Jacqueline, who has been a content creator at OnlyFans for two years, said the ban would destroy her and others. “People will not be able to meet their needs,” he said.
The Adult Performance Artists Guild, the union representing OnlyFans, creators webcam, and the dancers, said that there would be a lot of people who could potentially lose their income as a result of the policy.
Meanwhile, OnlyFans said it remains committed to the highest levels of security and content moderation of any other social media platform.
“All content creators are verified before being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content will be checked by both automated and manual systems.
OnlyFans is just one of the platforms that crack down on sexual content. Previously, Facebook and Instagram had strictly banned the content.
Last week, OnlyFans released the app safe for work separately called OFTV, which allows users to upload content that is free of sexual content, such as vlogs and cooking videos.
