Samsung has begun adding technology support to its smartphones that greatly expands their capabilities. What’s nice is that it will be implemented not only in new devices, but also in those that have already been released and are being sold (or sold).
The technology is called RAM Plus and will increase the amount of RAM. The virtual memory allocated from the drive will be added to the physical memory. A larger amount of RAM can increase the speed of the smartphone, and more applications can run in the background without unloading. But you need to understand that this can affect energy consumption, because more tasks consume more energy.
Generally, RAM supports faster write and read speeds than storage drives, but modern storage drives are fast enough to be used to expand RAM. Technologies similar to RAM Plus are being introduced into their products by other companies, including Xiaomi, Vivo and Realme. Samsung was not the first, it only picked up the trend started by the Chinese manufacturers (which is still commendable).
Expandable RAM does not require a major update. It will appear on some models of smartphones with the release of the next patch, including the monthly security patch. Currently, support for RAM Plus arrives on the Galaxy A52s 5G model in several countries with an update bearing the technical number A528BXXU1AUH9. This smartphone has 6 GB of RAM, and through system settings you can add 4 GB to it. Which Samsung smartphones will support RAM Plus is still unknown.
