Samsung has patented the design of a new foldable smartphone. Its distinctive feature will be the ability to fold in two directions.
The application for this patent was registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization in October 2020, and the publication of this document took place only this week – April 15.
The patent provides a schematic representation of the novelty, and the Let’s Go Digital website created more realistic renders.
Probably, this smartphone will be included in the Galaxy Z Flip line, within which Samsung is already releasing devices. Thanks to a special hinge joint, the body can be folded in two directions – the screen remains either inside or is visible from both sides at once. In the first case, it is protected from scratches, and in the second, it can be used when there is no risk of scratching it. The smartphone can also be used in a fully opened state, then its dimensions are about the same as conventional mobile devices.
It is noteworthy that Samsung wants to keep only the front-facing camera in this smartphone. It will be double, and the flash will be replaced by the emission of white light from the screen. For the sake of saving space in the body of the main camera there will be no, this will make the smartphone not as thick as other similar “clamshells”. The fingerprint scanner will be built into the screen.
