Sales of the PlayStation 5 console started on November 19, 2020 and they are still accompanied by problems that are caused by a shortage of devices and actions on the part of resellers. We played a novelty and now we will tell you in detail that you will have to wait some more time until the deliveries get better.
It is worthwhile to immediately make it clear that we are not drowning for any particular platform, since both next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft turned out to be interesting with their advantages, nuances and disadvantages. The launch of the nextgen at the end of last year turned out to be really difficult, but looking ahead, we can say that the excitement turned out to be, to put it mildly, overheated, and you can easily wait out the shortage, but more on that below.
We meet by clothes
One way or another, we first meet any new gadget in appearance. First impressions of the device are based on the box, packaging and design of the gadget. When it comes to packaging, it looks like Sony has decided to save as much as possible. The box is made of fragile cardboard, and everything inside is pretty plain. The PlayStation 5 bundle includes: console, DualSense wireless controller, HDMI 2.1 cable, power cable, USB cable for controller charging, stand and documentation.
After taking the PS5 out of the box, the first thing that catches your eye is the size. It’s very big! Live design feels pretentious and impractical, because in most cases all this will hide in a niche (if it fits) or behind a TV, and in this regard, there is no point in praising or scolding design decisions. However, I would like to see an iteration in a more compact package in the future.
One more thing about the dimensions of the PlayStation 5. It fit right into the niche under the TV in a horizontal position, but I didn’t leave it that way. There are concerns that the console may not have enough space to cool effectively. Another drawback is the central element made of glossy black plastic. He collects absolutely all fingerprints.
In an upright position on the PS5 stand it stands confidently, does not sway. Be sure to consider one point when placing. Hot air is blown out from the back of the device, so it is better to direct this side where other devices are not located so as not to cause them to overheat.
On the front panel of the PlayStation 5 there is a disc drive slot (I have a version with a drive), buttons for turning on and ejecting the disc, as well as two USB-C ports. At the back are: a power connector, two USB-A ports, LAN and HDMI. As for the overall appearance, I want to note that the design is not the strong point of the PS5, but do not rush to write it down as a disadvantage.
Window to nextgen
After the first press of the power button, we are waiting for the first launch menu and the first sensations of the nextgen. During the step-by-step setup, the system will explain how to connect DualSense, select a power saving mode, install updates, complete the first launch and get lost in games. The PS5 slogan reads: “Play Has No Limits”. Keep this phrase in your head throughout the entire review and do not forget that the main thing in console gaming is games and the ease of launching them, and you want to leave all other moments under the hood to be torn apart by PeKa-boyars.
At the end of the first launch, the system will offer to install applications for entertainment (online cinemas, streaming services, etc.) and transfer data from the PlayStation 4. Regarding the latter, I did not do this in order to “start from scratch”.
The operating system interface has received a number of useful changes and has become even simpler and more ergonomic. Any avid soniboy will get used to it in a few minutes. The home screen is now split into two sections: Games and Multimedia. This solution allows you to achieve order in the interface.
The PS button on the controller is now responsible for launching the control center on a single press. It switches between games, access to notifications, setting up sound, microphone and accessories. In addition, there is also a profile menu and console shutdown. The row of home screen icons are now located not in the center, but in the upper left corner. So the developers decided to free up space for additional information. When you select a game or application, the visual design of the entire screen changes. Pressing the pointer down on the crossbar opens the corresponding additional information: news, additions, achievements, and more.
I would also like to note the new profile section. It has become more convenient and laconic. It was split into four menus: Browse, Games, Friends, and Sharing. The “Settings” section has remained almost unchanged. In general, the operating system interface is fast, does not slow down or jams.
Where are the games, Jim Ryan?
Remember at the beginning of the review I mentioned the slogan and games? So, another reason why you shouldn’t worry about the shortage of consoles is the very weak line of launch titles. At the start, PlayStation 5 has only two exclusive AAA projects: a remake of Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. I don’t know about you, but they don’t “sell” the console to me. Nevertheless, both games deserve respect. Especially the first one, since Demon’s Souls deserved a quality re-release. This is the famous FromSoftware game that kicked off the souls series.
Comparison of PS5 and PS4 Slim sizes
If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a PS5 soon, the first game to look out for is Astro’s Playroom. No kidding! Set aside exclusives, wait with the Assassins Creed Valhalla and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War discs unboxing. Instead, download the free Astro’s Playroom and walk through it from start to finish, it doesn’t take long. This title will fully reveal all the features and benefits of the DualSense gamepad.
The first few hours of Astro’s Playroom are shocking, that’s where the next-generation feel comes in and it’s not about the graphics. At first, you sit with a stone face and simply do not believe everything that is happening in your hands, and then you start to rejoice at all the mechanics of the controller, like a child on a new toy. I’ll tell you more about this in the DualSense section.
Putting the grumbling about new titles aside, let me remind you that normal backward compatibility is finally available on the PlayStation 5. You can play exclusives with PS4 and more. Most third party games are also available. Thus, in anticipation of the sequel to God of War and Horizon, there will be something to do.
Gameplay at your fingertips
The moment came when the phrase “gameplay at your fingertips” became one hundred percent correct. The DualSenese gamepad is a key feature of the PlayStation 5. Returning to the aforementioned Astro’s Playroom, it reveals all the nuances of the new controller.
A set of vibration motors, adaptive triggers and a speaker are responsible for engaging in the gameplay. All this together creates a very realistic impression of what is happening. For example, when an astrobot runs on a steel surface, the subtle vibration and clank from the speaker create a realistic feeling of the character’s stomping. Triggers change resistance depending on the gameplay. I really want to try this thing in races and in the sequel to Horizon during archery.
After hours of DualSense play, the DualShock 4 and other controllers feel unnatural and outdated. It is worth noting that previously, third-party developers did not particularly pick up all the chips of Sony gamepads, but, at least in all future exclusives, we will probably see the implementation of new DualSense capabilities.
The controller left me the most vivid impressions. In addition to the incredible tactile feel, DualSense is now more comfortable. It feels nicer in the hand compared to the DualShock 4, and it also looks really cool. In this regard, Sony should be commended for the design. All the elements are in place, nothing creaks or backlash, and the gamepad also holds a charge very well. Of the minuses, I note that the PS button is very close to the microphone activation key. Because of this, accidental clicks sometimes occur.
What is there in teraflops
The PlayStation 5 is very quiet. During long gaming sessions, it is slightly louder than the Xbox Series X. Despite this, to hear its noise, you will need to come close to the console and bend over. Games start very quickly. On average, I estimate it takes about 20 seconds to load. The console itself turns on in about 25-27 seconds, but waking up from sleep mode takes only about 9 seconds.

Press X to win
From the point of view of technology, the PlayStation 5 is very cool, but with the appearance it was a little unlucky, but as mentioned above, this is not a problem, since the console is purchased primarily for games, and not as an interior item. A huge role in promoting PS5 will undoubtedly be played by the DualSense gamepad and its tactile capabilities, which are rather difficult to describe in words and it is better to try it once to discover new sensations in gaming. Overall, the PlayStation 5 looks like the next generation since the first launch, but back to the slogan “Play Has No Limits” and start pouring tar.
It is very difficult to get a novelty now, provided that you are not ready to overpay, and I highly recommend doing this. If you now own a PS4 or Xbox One and really want to be involved in the launch of the nextgen, then, believe me, it’s not worth it, and it is better to wait out the period of shortage of devices. The shortage problems will eventually be resolved and we can all buy the console at the recommended price without queues or pre-orders.
