Sony Interactive Entertainment will begin production of an updated version of the PlayStation 5 in 2022. This is stated in the material of the Taiwanese edition of DigiTimes, which claims that suppliers, including chip maker TSMC, plan to start releasing components for the production of the upgraded PS5 between the second and third quarters of next year.
Noted Kantan Games analyst Dr. Serkan Toto, twitted that his sources in the DigiTimes supply chain indicated that the updated PS5 will ship with “New semi-custom” 6nm AMD processor. How it will differ from the chip used in the PS5 now is not specified. But due to the transition to a more advanced technical process, the frequency of the CPU and GPU can increase.
Most likely, the update will focus exclusively on the internals of the PlayStation 5 and will not contain any significant external changes.
Sony Interactive Entertainment recently said PlayStation 5 shipments are unlikely to skyrocket in the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2022.
However, speaking with an investor following the release of PlayStation’s record-breaking financial results, CFO Hiroki Totoki said Sony is considering various solutions to help address the global component shortage, including possible redesign of the console or finding secondary suppliers.
